Finally got my hands on a nice open top drum. Perfect lid too, no bung hole (? ). Kit ordered... been smoking on a 30 drum (pbs) knock-off since last summer. This will be a welcome upgrade. Can't wait to have them both smoking!!!!
lol... actually, I'm picking up some paint stripper on the way home today, clean up what didn't come off during the burn. It's actually warming up here in NJ to the point where I can finish and paint it this week. This little bit of inspiration just got me going.... Next weekend ---- smoked ribs on the Big Poppa!!! Will post build pics and of coarse RIBS!
A few progress pics. Unlike my smaller 30 gallon UDS, I couldn't get all the paint off on the initial burn. Probably needed a lot more wood. Paint stripper from the auto store didn't seem to have much effect either. Final clean up with an orbital sander. Tonight I'll strip the lid and drill all of the holes. Depending on weather and temps, paint Wed/Thurs. Ribs on Saturday!!!
Here it is. Total happiness and a fun build... Christened with a pair of St. Louis racks, one with a basic S & P seasoning, glazed with butter, honey, brown sugar. Second with one of my favorites - Mr. bones dry rub and sauce. As I expected, chased temp a little, adjustments took just slightly longer compared to my smaller 30g smoker. Amazing just how little airflow it takes to hold 225. Looking forward to a smoke filled summer here in NJ!! Now my wife says I need to refinish the smaller one to mach. Which was basically last summers prototype build.
