I was so close to getting one of the Gateway smokers (especially the BPS version), but I am so glad I went with the SS EDS

they are both fabulous I have one of each in my back yard...the gate way is a smoking machine and the bps smokes great but you can grill...they are different and both super great

Is it worth getting, since it is an optional accessory? I understand it sits on the lowest grate and not on the charcoal basket, correct?

You understand correctly. I mostly cook over direct coals, but the plate gives me an option to cook at a lower temperature or off of the direct heat. I drop it in after I wrap, for instance, to keep from burning any sugars. It is a worthwhile thing to have in your arsenal, if not an absolute necessity.
