That's the truth BP. Up here in the PNW with all of the rain we get, that mold doesn't take very long to start growing. I ordered a couple of your drum covers for my two drums a while back and they...

The charcoal and ashes can be corrosive. Settlers used to make lye for their homemade soap by running water through them. Nix on any paint on the basket either. There's many poisonous compounds in...
Do a google search for steel drums in your area. Here's one. It looks like they have a selection of new and used, open or closed top(you want open). Good luck. Standard Steel Drums from Gurman...
Well, another Thanksgiving under the belt. Literally. As always, a big family gathering for us with the usual and new culinary delights. Sweet taters, mashed taters and gravy, salads, stuffing, from...
Some high heat paints require a high heat primer, others don't. The car painting expert you chose will know what's needed.
The red army!
Nice abitrandom! Re: your bottom vents if you decide to remove and re-shape them. Get a cylinder that's smaller than the barrel diameter(I used a scuba tank) and roll the vent back and forth a few...
8fan, If you have a local butcher that you know, you could ask if he(she) will order you in some tri tip. It's the bottom sirloin sub primal. The muscle name is "tensor fasciae latae" . At the local...
With K blue bag, about 7 hr. @275F. If I mound up the basket, another hr. or so. With good quality lump, about the same. (still experimenting with brands). With K red bag, 9-10 hrs. Burn time also...
Everyone's drum runs a bit different. I need to re-fuel when I do briskets and butts. I know approx. when I need to re-charge and do it before the fire starts to taper off. It takes less than a...
Still deciding on whether to powder coat or do high temp paint. Got some time to think about it.[/QUOTE]
Some of the high temp. paints that you get, like at your local auto parts store are not...
Great job Gman! Glad you posted your process because....I don't recall seeing any postings on here where someone used a weed burner to remove the dreaded liner. Much better than having to build a...
Headbutt,
It looks like there is enough room for the bottom vents before the ribs start. The vents might be a little closer to the bottom than where the drilling template places them, but not an...
Hi realmccoy,
I don't know what the chemical composition of the lining is, but that's the first time I've heard it stated that it can be left in the barrel. Not sure I'd buy that either. I doubt...
Welcome to the forum K-TOWN. Show us what you cook!
If you want to replace the original gasket for a good seal around the lid: http://www.bbqgaskets.com/index.html
They have seals for many applications.
You'll need to remove the gasket. It's not "heat safe".
I hear ya on the $$. Commercial and industrial painters also do sandblasting for water towers, bridges etc. Auto body shops are an option. If you can locate some of those, a phone call to them might...
Nice mod swamp!
A search for sandblasting in the yellow pages or search engine should get you what you need.
Swamp, with your hanging apparatus, are you cooking with the drum open for the duration?
Those ribs look fantastic Brian! I need to give this technique a shot.
 Good luck with this upcoming season!
A new drum will cost more than a used one, obviously. I called one of the local oil supply companies and got a price of $85 for a new unlined open top barrel. Uline also sells them. There's a rust...
If you have the drum sandblasted all you'd need to do is a seasoning burn. The drum is also ready for paint after a wipedown and tack rag. Not so with burning. A lot of cleaning remains.
