Presentation

One thing I notice about some of the cooks we have on this forum is that once they have everything plated up, it looks as though it was done by a professional chef. My plates look thrown together.

Just wondering if any of you backyard chefs can offer some tips on how to plate a meal properly.

I dont know if you are including me on this but presentation is important....just like in comp bbq appearance counts. The only hint is to try to balance the plate and have a paper towel to clean the plate where stuff has dripped where food is absent

  • Don't overload the plate.
  • Keep symetry in mind when placing items on the plate.
  • Use natural or incandescent lighting rather than a flash.
  • Glossy exteriors wins contests! Keep the meat looking moist.
  • Use specialty plates, squares, triangles, etc, white make most food pop
  • Try to include a beverage next to the plate
  • Keep the plate clean

What I have noticed is those who are real good with plating. Don't crowd the plate. Think about the photo you are taking not the serving size. You can correct that after the photo. We all have looked at cook books and seen photos that make you want to try the recipe. That's is what you want to shoot for.
