question regarding the BPS UDS Kit thermometer

I just finished my first build, and during my first smoke I noticed something odd with the thermometer. It is screwed into the 3/4 inch hole, but the meter portion will still rotate independent of the shaft. The needle moves when I rotate it, showing a lower reading when straight up and down at a 90 degree angle, and showing hotter the more you rotate it away from you. It reads about 30 degrees Fahrenheit higher when rotated to 45 degrees.

My question is, a) is this normal b) what position should the thermometer be in?

I'm having a difficult time picturing what is happening. Can you post a video?

This is the position the thermo should be in

The thermo should work in any position you want it, from flat to vertical. Mine are about 15 degrees off of vertical so I can see when standing at the drum, or through my patio slider on inclement days.

Mine doesn't do that. It looks like the nut that fastens the dial gauge to the probe end is loose. You'd have to disassemble the gauge by pulling off the needle and pull out the azimuth to get at it.
