I bought a BPS kit a year ago, but my wife was pregnant and due so I never got a chance to build it.
It sat in the attic until this past weekend.
I tried finding an open head drum without a liner since my HOA would freak out if I did a burn out of the drum. No luck.

New/used open barrels without a liner were $75... too much for me to spend
So my friend gave me a closed head drum and off I went.
Free drum plus a $45 kettle grill from walmart was better then spending $75 on an open head drum.

Here is my finished BPS drum.
It now has 2 level cooking grates with a hinged lid and sealed using an oven gasket
To monitor temps, I'm using a Wireless Temperature Monitor (Maverick ET733)

I LOVE THIS SMOKER!

Nice job omegatek! That's good info for others that are having difficulty finding an open top drum. You have some extra height for things like a whole turkey. Which, by the way, the drum does an excellent job on!

love it butwould love more on the hinge...way cool

Thanks everyone!

I got the idea for the hinge from here:

The Smoke Ring (http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=540888&sid=8ef72c4871780b8988ee86a0dcc5d590)

Here are the parts:

Backyard Grill Kettle Charcoal Grill (Includes the Hinge) -- $45 (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Backyard-Grill-Kettle-Charcoal-Grill/31897787)

6 ft. x 2 in. x 1/8 in. Steel Flat Plate -- $15 (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-6-ft-x-2-in-x-1-8-in-Steel-Flat-Plate-42230/100338294)

Rutland Gasket Kit Tape -- $11 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MIPB6S/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Some stainless steel nuts and bolts for around $10

Total cost was $81

I basically just bent the flat bar by hand around the drum and used vice grips to hold it in place while drilling some holes for the nuts and bolts.

Pros:

More rack space
Hinged Lid
Extra rack (1 that comes with BPS kit and 1 from the kettle grill)

I'm very happy with this mod and how easy it was to do.

Consider getting a fatty sized frogmat (or BP mat) to help keep the fatty nice and round throughout the cook. Gravity is your enemy otherwise.
